MaryJo 8: Prom

Although it’s only February, I have been in high school long enough to learn to anticipate how quickly the second half of the school year rushes itself to end. Maybe only after we’ve been through a semester once before does the second one feel quicker, like the trip back on a road already traveled. Or maybe it’s because of how conveniently all of our major responsibilities are all concentrated in the last 3 months of the year, and dreading their arrival only motivates it.

This year sets the bar the highest it has been for how much end-of-the-year stress I’m given, from upcoming finals, AP exams, and SAT’s to college visits and applications. However, what has been winning the battle for the most thought and concern taken from me was prom.

This year, I can finally go to prom without having to be asked by an upperclassman since, surprisingly, I am the upperclassman now. It will also be the first high school dance that I go to, since I have been unable to go to homecoming because of marching band and had no interest in going to any winter formals. Prom is one of the most classic experiences growing up that most people can easily recall decades of years after. So many movies and shows have teased me with beautiful dresses, flashing lights, and sickly romantic slow dances. Although I have no expectations for my first prom to be anything like 10 Things I Hate About You, I am still really excited to see how it will turn out.

This weekend, I sat down with my mom and began looking for prom dresses, mostly because my mom found a website full of nice dresses on a winter sale. I could have spent hours looking through all of the different types of dresses and colors. I finally found one that I really liked, and I couldn’t help but go back to it even after looking at alternatives. I know it’s risky to buy a dress online, but the reviews were very good and it looked really beautiful in the pictures people attached with them. My mom and I even got measuring tape to get exact measurements for a custom fit. Maybe I’m going over the top, especially since prom isn’t until 3 months, but I’m super excited to finally be able to go and have a fun time with my friends.

Are you going to prom, and are you excited as I am?

  1. I have been so stressed about prom, even though it's so far away! Like you said, it really comes at you fast. I just got my prom dress a few days ago, so I can feel at least slightly more relaxed about the prom situation. Dresses need to be bought and tables and groups set so early that prom still seems pretty overwhelming to me. I am excited to see how it all turns out though!

  2. I am so excited for prom! I don't think it is too early for you to be looking for a dress. In fact, I think it's a good idea to order the dress online now in case you don't like how it turns out, so then you can return it and still have time to look for another dress. Although prom dress shopping can be fun, it is also very stressful and difficult for me! I think it has been so difficult because I have this ideal dress in my mind that I am specifically looking for, but, of course since it's a dress that I just created in my mind, I can't find it anywhere. I hope to find something similar to it soon so that I can feel more relaxed and excited about prom.

  3. I have already been to prom because my boyfriend was a senior last year and like most things that have been played out I found the experience underwhelming, however I have never been a big fan of social events in general especially not one as big as prom. Now it might have just been my circumstances, hence why I am going again this year, but if I had any advice to give you to enjoy prom is to choose people to go with that you know you are going to have a great time with. What made my first prom so memorable was not the dress or the food or the music it was the people I danced with and laughed with throughout the night.

  4. I too went to prom last year, and I had such a wonderful night, The people I spent the night with made it a memory i will cherish forever, there is always something about school dances that always excited me. Especially prom, due to all the young adult romance novels/movies i read and watch. Prom to me was a very stressful time to prepare for but once the night came it will forever be a good memory. I loved prom dress shopping, Ive already started so its never too early!!

  5. I would HIGHLY recommend going to prom! It is going to be so amazing, the theme is incredible (check out the display case on Monday to find out)! I am also stressed with not only planning an event for 600 people, but also figuring out what I want to wear. To anyone questioning whether it will be worth it, I can say with confidence that it will definitely live up to your expectations and even be better than the movies :)

  6. I'm so excited for prom as well! I have been working with Jr Exec to plan it since the summer now and I'm so excited to see all of our ideas come to life. But of course I'm excited for the cheesy parts of prom too. I already have my dress and I have ideas for shoes and accessories. On the other hand I have no idea what to do with my hair. Another thing I enjoy so far about my first "prom season" is seeing everyone's dresses and how excited they are to wear it!
