Nigohosian 7: The Key to Intelligence

Nigohosian 7: The Key to Intelligence

This week, I decided to look at the weekly blogging challenge for some inspiration and I came across this quote by Albert Einstein where he stated, “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination”. I found this quote helpful because it serves as a reminder that it's not how much information you know, but what you can do with your imagination. Anyone can peruse countless books and amass all the knowledge in the world, but what good does it do if it can’t always be applied or be used properly. That’s where our imaginations come into play.

Our imaginations are extremely flexible and allow us to take any information that we have and apply it in ways that we never thought possible. On top of this, it allows us to create a variety of solutions to an issue that can never be found in a book, which is why the imagination is so important. Also, there are even some instances where a person's imagination became the reality around us. For example, Einstein developed the Theory of Relativity to redefine the understanding of gravity and how it worked. Originally, Isaac Newton discovered that gravity was a force, but he couldn’t prove how. Gravity mostly remained this way until Einstein developed his theory. He looked at the force with a different perspective and realized that it was the matter that moved in curved pathways that created the effect of gravity. For this reason, imagination is a very important part of intelligence because there would be no knowledge that existed if we had not questioned and thought about our surroundings. So what do you think is more important, knowledge or imagination?

  1. We were actually just talking about imagination and creativity as a measure of intelligence in AP Psych recently! I think that imagination is key to intelligence. Without imagination, the amount of knowledge we are able to store and recall is so much less. Imagination is a necessary, direct pathway to building knowledge and intelligence.

  2. I agree, Imagination is definitely the key to intelligence. Without imagination we wouldn't retain knowledge. we would be lifeless individuals.

  3. This reminds me of a quote I heard once. "Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad." The amount of knowledge you have means nothing if you don't know how to use it. It's the same idea as book smarts and street smarts. Someone could spend more than half their life getting a doctorate at Harvard, and still be less intelligent than someone who dropped out of high school to devote more than half their life to gaining experience in a field. While knowledge is important, it is useless without imagination.

  4. I think that imagination is extremely important and it doesn't come close. The amount of knowledge a person has means nothing if it cannot be applied by them. Imagination is everything as it allows you to use and apply knowledge that you have gained in new and abstract ways. This allows for new inventions and discoveries that wouldn't be possible by just using knowledge that was previously discovered.

  5. I definitely agree with you that creativity is a huge factor in intelligence. While reading and learning about other people's ideas and the pre-existing knowledge that someone else created is certainly not an easy task to master for all subjects, it is certainly more simple than using your own imagination to come up with new methods. Society and the world would remain the same forever if it was not for the people who question existing knowledge.
