This year for Christmas, my boyfriend bought tickets for us to go see Chicago on Broadway. He knew how much broadway and the city meant to me. I have been yearning to see this show for years and years. After a few reschedules, we finally made it to the city to see the show.Chicago is very different from other Broadway phenomenons. It is the longest-running American musical in Broadway history and is one of the most popular shows worldwide. The most popular songs from the show are "All that Jazz" or "Cell Block Tango." It follows the story of a woman, Roxie Hart, and what happens to her as she kills the man she was having an affair with. It is all about the legal process and how many women in the 1920's got away with murder. As I mentioned before, Chicago is very different from other shows. The orchestra is one stage, there is no set whatsoever and not much to the costume. However, the music, dancing, and intense storyline make up for all of this. The show is a bit risque but in a tasteful way. It is now in my top five musicals I have seen.
Now, as I ramble on about this show and my love musicals, I ask you these questions. Have you seen any Broadway shows? If so, which was your favorite? If you could pick one show out now, what would it be? If you could choose one show to put on Broadway that is not there currently, what would it be and why?

ReplyDeleteI love musical theater productions in general, but there is a magical element that the Broadway aspect adds to theater. I saw Cinderella (Rodger and Hammerstein's version) and The Phantom of the Opera. Although Cinderella had some very cool and quick costume changes and props, The Phantom of the Opera will forever be one of my favorite shows. The score and storyline is so powerful and delicate at the same time. To be specific, the song "The point of no return" is such an important song to the show. I don't wanna give anything away in case a few have not seen the show, but this song leads to something reallllly important. While this song is so powerful, it is soft and meek, which really moved me when I first listened to it. I would wanna see Jagged Little Pill, Hamilton, Chicago, Moulin Rouge and Hadestown. I really wish that Thoroughly Modern Millie or Anything Goes would come back to Broadway. Although I love that some shows are becoming more modern, Anything Goes and Thoroughly Modern Millie are the foundation of "musical theatre". There's difficult notes in the solos, fun duos and trios, big tap numbers, and a storyline that keeps you on your toes.
ReplyDeleteI also really love New York and Broadway. I know a little bit about the show, Chicago, but I did not know that they do not have much of a set. Although that is really interesting, I feel like I would prefer the shows with more set pieces. I think that it would be awesome to go see Chicago, but I do not think it is one of my personal top choices. I have seen The Book of Mormon on Broadway and I will be going to see Hadestown soon as well. I had also seen some Spiderman play on Broadway when I was super young so I really don't remember anything about it (to this day I am still confused as to why my parents chose "Spiderman" of all shows). I think that the shows I would be most interested in seeing right now, though, would be The Phantom of the Opera and West Side Story. As to your last question, I cannot decide so I will give two. The two shows that I would love to see on Broadway, or back on Broadway, are The Hunchback of Notre Dame (probably my all time favorite musical) and Les Miserable (probably my second favorite.) Hopefully someday I will be able to see these shows!
